What is a Navien boiler?
A Navien boiler is a wall-hung, gas-fired condensing appliance that heats water for a hydronic space-heating system. That heated system water can circulate through radiant-floor tubing, radiators, baseboard, panel radiators or properly designed fan coils.
A heating-only Navien boiler does not produce domestic hot water directly the way a combi-boiler does. It can be paired with a properly designed indirect water heater when the home needs stored domestic hot water.

Radiant floors often operate at lower water temperatures, which can work well with condensing boiler technology. Correct mixing, flow, tubing layout, controls and outdoor reset are essential. A boiler cannot correct a poorly balanced or restricted radiant system by itself.
Cast-iron and panel radiators
Navien boilers can be used with many radiator systems when the boiler, piping and controls are designed for the required water temperature and flow. Older systems may contain iron oxide, sludge or high water volume, so water quality, air removal, expansion capacity and magnetic separation deserve close attention.
Hydronic baseboard
Baseboard systems can operate with a Navien boiler, but the available baseboard length and required supply temperature must be considered. Lower water temperatures improve condensing potential, but they also reduce baseboard output. We evaluate both efficiency and the home's ability to stay warm.

Heat-loss calculation

Water temperature and condensing performance
Condensing boilers recover more heat when return-water temperatures are low enough to promote condensation. Radiant floors commonly operate at favorable temperatures. Some radiator and baseboard systems require hotter water during cold weather. We set realistic expectations based on the actual system rather than promising maximum efficiency in every application.
Near-boiler piping and hydraulic separation
The piping must provide the flow required by the boiler while distributing heat correctly to the system. Depending on the application, that may require approved primary-secondary piping, a hydraulic separator, a manufacturer manifold or another permitted configuration. The goal is stable flow and predictable operation through every zone combination.
Circulator and zone control
Circulators must be selected for the required flow and head loss. Oversized pumps can create noise and excessive velocity, while undersized pumps can cause inadequate heating or boiler faults. Zone valves, pumps and thermostats also need a control strategy that works with the boiler.
Expansion tank and air removal
The expansion tank must match the system's water volume, temperature range, fill pressure and glycol concentration. Correct placement and pre-charge matter. Effective air separation reduces noise, corrosion and flow problems.
Outdoor reset
Outdoor-reset control adjusts boiler-water temperature based on outdoor conditions. The system can use cooler water during mild weather and increase temperature as outdoor conditions become colder. Correct settings improve comfort, lengthen run times and can improve condensing operation.
Gas supply

System water and glycol
New boilers are often connected to older piping, radiators and baseboard. Debris and magnetite from the existing system can damage pumps, restrict flow and contaminate the boiler. We evaluate flushing, filtration, magnetic separation and water treatment as part of the installation.
When glycol is required, the product and concentration must comply with the boiler manufacturer's requirements. Glycol changes heat transfer, pump performance and expansion-tank sizing, so it must be treated as a design factor rather than simply added to the system.
