Why Does My Hot Water Smell Like Rotten Eggs?

A rotten-egg odor in hot water usually comes from hydrogen sulfide gas produced or released within the water system. When the smell is present only on the hot side, the water heater, naturally occurring bacteria, water chemistry, and the sacrificial anode rod are common parts of the reaction. When hot and cold water both smell, investigate the well and treatment system before blaming the heater.
Start by identifying where the odor occurs. That one observation can prevent an unnecessary water-heater replacement.
Safety first: water odor or fuel-gas odor?
Natural gas is odorized so a leak is noticeable. If you smell a sulfur-like odor in the room near a gas-fired appliance, especially when no water is running, do not assume it is a water-quality problem. Leave the area, avoid switches and flames, and contact the gas utility or emergency services from a safe location.

Use this location test
Check several fixtures, including one close to the water heater and one farther away. Smell a glass of cold water, then a separate glass of hot water, away from the drain.

Do not smell directly over a sink drain and assume the water carries the odor. Run water into a clean glass and move away from the fixture. A drain can release odor when water movement displaces air in the trap or overflow channel.
Why hot water can create a stronger sulfur odor
Hydrogen sulfide is the gas associated with the familiar rotten-egg smell. Bradford White’s technical guidance describes three common ingredients in water-heater odor: a sulfur source, hydrogen, and bacteria. The heater can provide conditions that make the reaction more noticeable even when the incoming cold water has little odor.
The anode rod supplies corrosion protection
Most tank water heaters use a sacrificial metal anode to protect the steel tank from corrosion. The rod is intended to corrode so the tank does not. Depending on the water chemistry, anode material, temperature, and microbial activity, that protective process can contribute hydrogen to the odor-producing reaction.
The anode is not a disposable nuisance part. Removing it permanently can shorten tank life and may affect the manufacturer’s warranty. A correct repair preserves corrosion protection while addressing the odor.
Bacteria can thrive in parts of the system
Sulfur-reducing bacteria can contribute to hydrogen sulfide production. These organisms are not the same as iron bacteria, and odor does not identify whether the water is safe. Private wells still require laboratory testing according to current Minnesota well-water guidance.
Water chemistry changes the reaction
Sulfate, existing hydrogen sulfide, pH, temperature, stagnation, and treatment equipment can all influence odor. Softened water can also change the electrochemical conditions in the heater and the rate at which certain anodes are consumed.
That is why a single cure copied from another house may not work in yours.
What if hot and cold water both smell?
When the odor is present on both sides, sample untreated water before the softener, iron filter, carbon filter, or other equipment if the system has a safe sampling point. Possible sources include:
Hydrogen sulfide in the well water
Sulfur-related bacteria in the well or plumbing
Treatment media that is exhausted, fouled, or programmed incorrectly
A carbon filter that needs service
Stagnant water in an unused treatment tank or branch
The Minnesota Department of Health describes treatment methods that vary with hydrogen sulfide concentration. Activated carbon may be suitable at low concentrations, while oxidizing treatment can be used for higher loads. Equipment selection should follow testing, not odor intensity alone.

Repairs that may solve hot-water-only odor
Disinfect the heater and affected piping
If bacterial activity is suspected, a qualified plumber may disinfect the heater and hot-water piping using a procedure compatible with the appliance and plumbing materials. The disinfectant concentration, contact time, flushing procedure, and temperature controls matter.
Dumping chemicals into a water heater without a controlled procedure can damage components or create unsafe water. Follow the heater manufacturer’s instructions.
Inspect and select the correct anode
Anode condition should be evaluated as part of water-heater maintenance. Depending on the heater and water chemistry, a different manufacturer-approved anode material or a powered anode may reduce odor while maintaining tank protection.

Correct the source-water problem
If untreated cold well water contains hydrogen sulfide, changing the water-heater anode addresses only one reaction site. The whole-house solution may require oxidation, contact time, filtration, carbon, or another method selected from a current water analysis.
Remove stagnant sections
An unused recirculation loop, dead-end branch, abandoned treatment tank, or infrequently used fixture can harbor stagnant water. A plumber should evaluate the layout and restore circulation or remove unnecessary dead legs where practical.
Repairs that often disappoint
Removing the anode and leaving the port empty
The odor may improve, but the steel tank loses a major part of its corrosion protection. That trades an odor problem for a shorter-lived tank.
Raising the temperature without a safety plan
Higher temperatures can reduce some bacterial activity, but they increase scald risk and may require a properly installed thermostatic mixing valve. Temperature changes do not correct source-water hydrogen sulfide or an exhausted treatment system.
Installing carbon without testing
Carbon has finite capacity and specific flow requirements. High sulfur loading, iron, sediment, or bacterial growth can exhaust or foul it quickly. Carbon is not automatically the right first tank.
Replacing the water heater immediately
A new heater can develop the same odor if the source water and reaction conditions do not change. First confirm whether the smell is in hot water only and inspect the existing heater.
When odor comes with other warning signs
Schedule prompt service if the odor is accompanied by:
Leaking from the tank or fittings
Black, orange, or slimy material in the water
Sudden changes in pressure or flow
Repeated relief-valve discharge
A heater that will not maintain temperature
Recent well flooding or repair
A change in taste, color, or clarity on a private well
Odor treatment does not establish that a private well is microbiologically or chemically safe. Use a certified laboratory for health-related testing.
Frequently asked questions
Is rotten-egg-smelling hot water safe to use?
Odor alone cannot answer that. Hydrogen sulfide is often an aesthetic problem at concentrations found in household water, but a private well can contain unrelated contaminants with no smell. Test the well according to MDH guidance.
Will flushing the water heater fix the smell?

Does a water softener cause rotten-egg odor?
A standard softener does not remove most odor compounds. It can change water chemistry, and poorly maintained treatment equipment can contribute to stagnation. Sample before and after the equipment to locate the change.
Why does the smell return after vacation?
Water sitting in a heater and piping gives odor-producing reactions more time. Flush fixtures safely on return. Repeated post-stagnation odor still deserves a heater and water-quality evaluation.
Can I replace the anode myself?
Anodes can be difficult to remove, require clearance, and must match the heater. The tank must be isolated, cooled, depressurized, and restored without leaks. If you are not familiar with those steps, use a licensed plumber.
